"IF IT IS TRANSIT, WE'LL MAKE IT COMPETITIVE": "Russia hosts foreign airplanes, in the future we'll welcome trains (the Finnish "Sibelius" has already been calling) and, consequently, river vessels. We ought not to close, but, on the opposite, we should encourage the boost of transportation volumes", assures Igor Levitin, The RF Minister of Transport.

DEPENDENT COAL: Lately Russian coal sector has been considered one of the most stable and fast developing, due to high coal prices on the world markets and investment activity of coal producers. Analysts evaluate coal produce at about 282 million tons in 2005.

TO SAVE RUSSIAN SHIPBUILDING: Russia is one of the leading sea powers in the world, historically in possession of a strong merchant, fishery and military fleet. However, by now it has almost lost its leading positions in the sphere of shipping and shipbuilding.

BETWEEN EUROPE AND ASIA: The Mission of the state-run railway company Russian Railways (OAO RZD) is aimed at satisfying the transportation market, increasing efficiency and services quality and deep integration into Eurasian transport system. The international aspect of the latter target is becoming more and more significant day by day.

CONTINENTAL BRIDGE: Russia reached its maximum volume of container transportation in the 1980ies. Then it amounted to 31 mln tons. Up to now there have been no results shown that could compare to or exceed this figure. This year some 19.5 mln tons are planned to be made. Surely, it won't break the record mentioned, but obviously the sector is getting closer and closer to it...

TRANSPORT ENGINEERING: FROM DUSK TILL DAWN: After the Soviet Union disintegration the Russian engineering industry had suffered a long stagnation, largely conditioned by the break-up of the economic interrelations system that used to exist between individual enterprises during the planned economy era. At the same time, the geography of the engineering industry that had been formed under the communist rule underwent no notable changes, which indicated the preserved potential of the industry that can become the sound basis for further progress.

Panorama: During the period of January-June,2005 throughput of the Russian transport totalled 2299.2 bln t/km. However the growth amounted to 2.8% year-on-year, while in 2003 the corresponding index reached 7.4%. What are the key factors that influenced the throughput growth?

OAO RZD voices new objectives: In June 2005 Vladimir Yakunin,who previously acted as the company's senior vice-president, was appointed OAO RZD president. What alterations in strategy and tactic will the corporation undergo? Some of them were demonstrated by the first programme reports and early decisions made by the new head of the company.

YEAR OF GREAT CHANGES: The year of 2004 was of special nature for the Russian transport complex. The administrative reform started in March to lay foundation of legislative, inspective and legal functions division of the federal bodies of executive power can't help provoking temporary additional difficulties regarding the solutions for everyday social-economic problems of the sector.

RUSSIAN OIL WINS NEW MARKETS: The Russian Federation took the second place regarding oil extraction volume after Saudi Arabia and one of the key suppliers. Thus, transportation of oil bulk becomes the issue of great importance.

PANORAMA: The Russian port sector changed considerably after the reform. Handling capacities extension, infrastructure development, investment volume increase and throughput growth characterise today's state of the affairs.

COOPERATION GOES FIRST: According to the Strategic Programme of the company its mission envisages market demand on transportation satisfaction, operation efficiency increase as well as services improvement and deep integration into Euro-Asian transport system.

RUSSIA AND CHINA: TRANSPORT INTEGRATION: On cooperation perspectives of Russia and China, in particular, within freight railway transportation sector OAO RZD Senior Vice-President Khasyan Zyabirov speaks.

PER ASPERA AD ASTRA: On the current situation of the ports sector speaks the Chairman of the Directors Board of the Association of sea port of Russia Vitaly Yuzhilin.
